Faith-based relief agencies have been the cornerstone for helping rebuild war-torn nations for years. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (or UMCOR) is one of dozens of international organizations now helping the West African nation of Liberia. UMCOR Liberia is headed up by South Dakota native Kerry Sly, who has dedicated his life to rebuilding troubled nations, no matter what the job requires.

SCRIPT:

Kerry Sly is a man with a purpose. He’s in the suburbs of Monrovia, Liberia, to oversee a nasty job few would accept.

Kerry Sly / Director, UMCOR Liberia: “Basic services such as water, sewer, electricity have not functioned in Monrovia for a very long time. And it’s right now that, with peace coming to Monrovia and hopefully to the whole of Liberia, that we can assist them with their recovery.”

Today it’s sanitation that has Sly hustling to help a neighborhood in need. This community latrine serves hundreds of people, and, without assistance, those who rely on it would be at risk for infectious diseases.

Kerry Sly: “UMCOR has the only functional liquid waste-management truck that is running and functional in Monrovia and Liberia.”

For the past two years, Sly has led the United Methodist Committee on Relief’s efforts in Liberia. UMCOR programs range from agriculture and education to food supply and sanitation.

Kerry Sly: “With the lack of a functioning sewer system now, this UMCOR truck is one of the most vital links you have to keeping the environment and communities healthy and safe.”

Kerry Sly: “These men are very happy to do this. In fact, they are very proud to be helping the communities in this way.”

There are much easier jobs in much safer conditions. But Sly knows that, in his years here, he has undoubtedly saved many African lives.
