Teen at cook off: “This chili is going for the food pantry and I think it’s really going to help the world.”

Girl at brownie sale: “You give a donation to the church to help the Ivory Coast of Africa.”

Kayla Porter: “We’re making little kits for UMCOR. It’s for people who need, like people in Haiti because of the earthquake.”

An energetic and impassioned crew from the United Methodist Church of the Rockaways in New Jersey spent a weekend making a difference.

Tina Smith, Church Outreach Coordinator: “They need help sorting. Let me show you what we need.”

It was the sort of event organized to benefit others, bit by bit, helping hand by helping hand. For church outreach coordinator, Tina Smith, it was a project without limits.

Tina Smith: “We’re showing children how to get involved and give back. You can change the world one person at a time. It doesn’t matter how old you are.”

Tina and little girl: “Women’s medium, right there in that box. Perfect.”

The Rockaways congregation joined thousands from around the globe in a weekend dubbed “Change the World.” The Rev. Jean McMullan believes events like this are what make the church relevant.

The Rev. Jean McMullan, United Methodist Church of the Rockaways : “It’s not only transformational for the people who are on the receiving end, but I think it’s also transformational for all the folks who are dropping off clothes and pet supplies and are going to eat chili later and the Girl Scouts that are doing brownies.”

From the chili cook-off and the clothing drive, to the brownie bake-off and disaster kits preparation, ten different programs benefitted from Rockaways’ heartfelt effort.

Sheila McLaughlin, Church Member: “Did you put in your spool of thread and also the buttons and the scissors?”

For Rev. McMullan, the seeds of change planted over the weekend should continue to provide a bountiful harvest for years to come.

Rev. McMullan: “It’s not about fundraising. It’s about outreach. It’s about changing lives.”
